Monte Cook's new RPG The Strange launches on Kickstarter

Not resting on his laurels just yet, legendary designer of Numenera and all round hunk of hotsauce Monte Cook has launched his new Kickstarter for a new RPG project called The Strange.

This time, Cook isn't alone, with another titan by his side - Bruce Cordell. While the Kickstarter has only been live for a day, it's already surpassed its goal by $50,000. Wowzers!

The Strange will use the Cypher system, which was introduced in Numenera, a fast and streamlined set of mechanics that focus on story over rules, and it's one my current gaming group is enjoying a whole lot. Doubt my sincerity? Watch the video above to see a quote from yours truly.

Guy, The Strange sounds very, very cool. This is the description the official site gives:

"The Strange is a game that crosses multiple worlds, called recursions, which player characters can explore and defend. In The Strange, your characters change with each world they travel to, taking on new aspects suited to that recursion’s unique laws and structures. Eventually, as characters progress, they might even gain the ability to create a recursion of their own!

Characters can move between the prime of Earth and various recursions that exist within the dark energy network that comprises the Strange. Each recursion has its own rules of existence, which means that magic works in some, science in others, psychic abilities are predominate in still others, and a few mix several elements. And of course in the dark energy network of the Strange itself, there are no rules; force of will is all"

The concept is original and fascinating, with a ridiculous amount of scope for the players and GM alike. The characters seem like they will evolve throughout the campaign as a direct result of what they experience and with the promise of being able to create your own worlds, that's just too much to pass up.
