The Trollish Delver Comic Book Club: Wolverine (1982)

I want to start something new on the blog, something that will encourage a little community banter, so I've decided to start The Trollish Delver Comic Book Club. Every month we will look at a comic story-arc and discuss it on the blog.

No, Pacific Rim is not another dumb action movie

I haven't written up a review of Pacific Rim yet, but I will tell you that I loved it. I loved it for so many different reasons, but mostly because it hearkened back to 1980s Saturday morning cartoons - it's full of energy, character and heart. But for some reason it's seen by some critics as an unintelligent film because of this.

Please.

There are spoilers ahead. You have been warned.

Get the first issue of Go Wherever! The USR zine

The first issue of Go Wherever! the quarterly zine dedicated to Unbelievably Simple Roleplaying is now available to buy at DriveThruRPG for the meagre price of 50p.

For less than the price of a chocolate bar you get articles on new settings, GM ideas, rules and other fun stuff. In this issue:

  • Advice on running a stonepunk USR game
  • Albalia - a new fantasy setting
  • An exclusive exerpt from Full Moon Defence Squad, an upcoming USR playset
  • Random planet table!
  • Ideas for non-violent games

USR Setting: Albalia, the Emerald Land

Albalia is common fodder for children's tales, especially in the cold dark of the Winterlands. A green and luscious place, Albalia is said to be inhabited by all manner of creatures, from elves and fairies to gnomes and brownies. It is a place that effortlessly merges natural beauty with the glorious architecture of the elves - pearl and limestone.

It looks like Marvel Studios just won Comic Con

I'm seeing reports flying hot from Comic Con's Hall H that Marvel Studios has won. Not only did they announce Avengers: Age of Ultron, but they gave the fans a whole boatload more goodness.

Man of Steel 2 to star Batman

It's the film event that many have been waiting for - the sequel to Man of Steel will star Batman. That's right, the Blue Boyscout will share frames with the Dark Knight...but that's not all!

Avengers: Age of Ultron is the official title to the Avengers sequel

Marvel has announced that the next Avengers flick will be subtitled Age of Ultron, which gives us comic nerds a big clue as to what to expect from the film.

The follow-up to the 2012 record-breaker has so far had fans wondering whether Thanos would play a part, considering his post-credits appearance, so the Infinity Gauntlet storyline seemed like the most logical possibility.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D pilot premiers at Comic Con to rave reviews

San Diego Comic Con is in full swing and of course Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is the new hotness that everyone's dying to hear more about. Well, lucky attendees at ABC's panel and pilot screening got a first look of what sounds like it's going to be a winning series.

USR submitted for an Indie RPG Award

The Indie RPG Awards are an annual celebration of games created by independent designers - those with little to no money behind their projects. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Unbelievably Simple Roleplaying has been registered for the awards by some lovely person. Whoever you are, thank you!

Someone made an online character generator for USR

It only takes five minutes to create a character in the (free!) Unbelievably Simple Roleplaying system anyway, but someone has created a simple online character generator that you can view here.

It's more of a programming experiment than anything else, and all you can do is create a name and assign your stats - no specialisms, but it's pretty neat all the same.

Survival tips for Comic Con newbies - video

San Diego Comic Con is just around the corner and people across America and the world are getting ready for the awesomess it will bring. However, if you're new then conventions, especially the goliath that is SDCC, can be a labyrinth of confusion and etiquette. Thankfully, Danni Danger from the Weird Girls Youtube channel has some great tips for noobs setting out to get their Comic On (eh? eh?)

One of the most important ones, in my mind, is that cosplay does not equate to consent. Seriously, don't be creepy.

Help reprint Maelorum - the epic gamebook

Ok, well, author William Fincher probably doesn't need much extra aid, having smashed the $3,000 target to reprint his awesome Maelorum gamebook that I previewed not too long ago, but hell, anything to make it more cool!

#TheBookThatMadeMe: The Fellowship of the Ring

Waterstones has started a campaign to find the books that inspired people, roping in celebrities and authors to aid the cause.

The Book That Made Me encourages everyone to go and share their story about the book that has had the biggest impact on their lives. People like Terry Pratchett, Ricky Tomlinson and Alice Walker have already shared their tales and are well worth a read.

Deities is a most unexpected Dungeons & Dragons album

Chamber Band don't immediately spring out as a band that would create tunes inspired the world's most popular roleplaying game - that's usually left to epic power metal bands and atmospheric instrumentalists. But their album Deities brings indie rock to the gaming table.

Awesome GIF brings Harry Potter magic to Murray's Wimbledon win

Ok, this is niftysauce. Apparently some genius effects person has put together a pretty elaborate GIF that crosses Harry Potter with Murray's awesome performance on Wimbledon's centre court.

Didja spot Dobby in the crowd? I guess it sort of explains how Murray won.

Listen to the awesome Pacific Rim soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi

I'm on a bit of a Pacific Rim kick here in anticipation for its release and chances are many of you guys are too, which is why you should totally wrap your earholes around this jam! The soundtrack by Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi is serious head candy.

First reviews of Pacific Rim incoming, all pretty positive

While Guillermo del Toro's robot monster mash Pacific Rim has people on the internet speculating whether it's going to be the next Battleship, lucky members of the press and celebs who caught the recent screening are more or less confirming my suspicions - it's awesome.

A sneak peek at Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls

If there's one RPG release I'm going nuts over in 2013 it's the epically Kickstarted Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls. I've had my supporters fridge magnet, post card and other gubbins, as well as a revamped Buffalo Castle solo adventure, but I hold in my hands a preview copy of dT&T. The lean tome was distributed for Free RPG Day this year, but I didn't manage to get hold of one. Fortunately Ken St Andre had a stockpile so he sent me a nice signed copy. Cheers Ken! I also have to note that this is still a work in progress and some of the rules herein could change, so bear that in mind.

Review: Fighting Fantasy - The Forest of Doom App

By now we're used to a nice consistent flow of digital gamebooks from leaders-of-the-pack Tin Man Games, and it's with much anticipation many fans have waited for The Forest of Doom, a title that definitely has 'interesting' written all over it. Players of the book back in the day may remember this as 'that one that's a forest instead of a dungeon', which was a concerted effort by Ian Livingstone to bring the story out of the dank underbelly of Titan and into the arboreal nightmare above.
