Much earlier than I anticipated, Wizards has decided to put on their website a companion to the Basic D&D rules for 5th edition, the Dungeon Master's Basic Rules.
The new free PDF details encounter building, a bestiary and some basic magic items. This coupled with the newly updated Basic rules means that you can pretty much get a campaign going for absolutely nothing. Like, seriously - go and do it, you massive cheapskate.
It's no coincidence that GenCon 2014 has kicked off at the same time the company has made these rules available. It's a pretty savvy marketing manoeuvre. Just like how Wizards has begun revealing excerpts from the new Monster Manual. Looks, here's Critical Hits with the Bulette.
As a side note, I really like the new descriptions and stat blocks. I was worried that they were going to strip away the fluff but this example has some great flavour to it.
